Ragna Crimson: The Reaper is Born – My Sister Was Actually Right (Episode 1 Review!)
What's up, everyone? I've got a new show I gotta talk about. My sister told me I had to watch Ragna Crimson. To be real with you, I don't always trust her picks, but then she just said, "It's an anime, though," and yeah, I was in. That's all the info I needed.
I just watched the first episode, "The Day the Reaper Was Born," and man, I have some thoughts.
First Impressions: Big Episode, Big Hype
The first thing you see is how long this episode is it’s huge, nearly 47 minutes long. When an anime drops a premiere this big, it usually means they're super confident in the story. They need that time to get you hooked. Every anime I’ve seen with a massive first episode has turned out to be good, so that's a great sign.
Spoiler Alert: While the action was awesome, the build-up of Ragna and Leo's relationship felt way too quick, and that fast shift left a bad taste in my mouth. I don't understand why the show felt like it had to rush through that part. Those little things are 100% just my personal opinion, and maybe they become a big deal later and I’ll like them, but for right now, they're the only little bumps in an otherwise perfect start. We'll definitely talk about that part more later.
The Premise: Simple Story, Instant Power
I love a simple story where the weak guy suddenly gets strong—that's my jam.
The basic story is super easy to get: humans are fighting scary Dragons led by six huge Dragon Monarchs (basically Dragon Kings). The Dragons just want to wipe out all humans.
Our main guy, Ragna, starts off completely weak like, totally useless. His only job is to protect this 12-year-old killer named Leonica (Leo). Then, BAM! He gets all the power, memories, and pain from his future, super-mad self.
This is 100% my kind of show: the weak hero gets instantly overpowered. I hope they don't do the One-Punch Man thing, though. I bet we'll see some Dragon Monarchs who Ragna can't beat easily, which will set up the massive fights later.
The fight system is simple, too:
Magic: What the Dragons use for massive damage.
Silverine (Anti-Magic): The stuff humans made that totally messes up Dragon magic and stops them from healing. This is what Ragna uses now.
Episode 1 Breakdown: The Reaper is Born
1. The Setup & The Danger Signs
The first half does a great job showing how much Ragna and Leo care about each other. We see Ragna feeling useless, and Leo being a total prodigy. But the story keeps showing massive danger signs for Leo, so you know the big twist is coming. You just wait for something bad to happen to kick Ragna into gear.
2. The Crazy Power Transfer
The bad thing happens when Grymwelte, a crazy strong Dragon, shows up. Ragna gets hurt and sees his future self—a silver-haired guy who failed to save Leo and spent a lifetime getting strong through pure suffering. Future Ragna doesn't waste time; he just gives all his power and sad memories to his younger self.
It's not just a power boost; it's like a whole personality swap, and it's brutal.
3. Instant OP, Total Psycho
The weak Ragna is gone. Now we have the cold, silver-haired Reaper. He uses this ultimate Silverine power, and the animation for it is seriously awesome, like a killer frozen cloud.
The best part? Grymwelte, the supposedly invincible Dragon, goes from flexing to being scared stiff when Ragna shows up. Ragna takes him out like he was nothing. This show skips the training montage; it's all about starting at the top to kill every single Dragon.
But the catch is huge—Ragna is now stuck with decades of pain and failure in his head. His power came with a crazy, messed-up price.
Final Verdict: Go Watch It!
This 47-minute premiere gave me everything I wanted: dark action, huge stakes, instant power, and a heavy emotional cost.
My Score for Episode 1: 5/5 Stars. Seriously, you gotta watch this one.
